Julie Sykes has lived in Spain, Mexico and Costa Rica. She received her MA in Spanish Linguistics from Arizona State University in May, 2004. She is currently a doctoral student in Hispanic Linguistics at the University of Minnesota and a Research Assistant for CARLA. Her areas of emphasis include interlanguage pragamtics and computer-aided language learning (CALL). Her most recent publication "Synchronous CMC & Pragmatic Development: Effects of Oral and Written Chat" appeared in the CALICO Journal (2005, Vol. 22, No. 3).

Andrew D. Cohen

Andrew D. Cohen was a Peace Corps Volunteer on the High Plains of Bolivia working in community development with the Aymara Indians. Cohen was Professor of Language Education at Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, for many years, served as a Fulbright Lecturer/Researcher in Applied Linguistics in Brazil, and is currently Professor of Applied Linguistics in the English as a Second Language Department at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. He was a visiting professor at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, from 2004-2005. Cohen has published numerous research articles on language learner strategies, pragmatics/speech acts, language testing, and research methods, as well as books on bilingual education, language learning, and on language testing. His last book was a co-edited volume with Diana Boxer, Studying speaking to inform second language learning (Multilingual Matters, 2004), and his current book project is the co-editing with Ernesto Macaro of a volume for Oxford University Press entitled Language learner strategies: 30 years of research and practice. Among his recent articles is "Strategies for learning and performing L2 speech acts," appearing in Intercultural Pragmatics (2005, Vol. 2, # 3, pp. 275-301).
