Spanish Grammar Strategies Website
Project director Andrew Cohen and graduate student Angela Pinilla-Herrera led an initiative to create a website where learners of Spanish could shop around for strategies that would help them deal with chronic grammar problems.
They began the project by interviewing a host of students and nonnative teachers in order to identify grammar forms that were problematic for them and to learn about the strategies that were used successfully to deal with these forms. They then created a website that showcased the best of these strategies through audio and video clips, as well as through graphics, drawings, and "mind maps."
The website went live in July 2009 and reactions have been positive. Research by done by two undergraduates at the University of Minnesota, Jonah Thompson and Lance Witzig, for example, found that 73% of the strategies that 15 volunteer student users of the website selected for use over a 6-8 week period were helpful to them in their Spanish studies.
